No Portfolio? No Excuses.

So you’re an unemployed designer or maybe you’re lucky enough to have just graduated into this wonderful economy we’re in. Whatever your situation, there’s no excuse for not having a portfolio with fresh work.
No clients? Make them up. Always wanted to make a poster for TRON? Do it. Think you have a better UI scheme than the iPhone’s? Make a prototype.
If you want to see what I’m talking about, have a look at the work of Justin Van Genderen:

I know designing new-old posters for classic films is in fashion right now, but it’s great creative exercise and a great way to flaunt your skills. You might even make some cash off it like Van Genderen does on Etsy.
